In a very brief note about an a9 demo, Michael Kanellos offers the following quote from a9's Udi Manber.

...while declining to trash-talk his competition, Manber said his small company has already beat Google in one regard.

"A9 is the No. 1 search engine in the world...if you list them alphabetically," he said.

Mind you, it really isn't bad. I know the web results come from Google, and don't include lots of the extra functions Google has on its own site (or image searching &c) but the Book results are a boon for book-oriented people like librarians (or would you disagree, Gary? ;) ) and the "Search inside the book" facility is brilliant. I guess the extra data available from Alexa is useful on occasion too.

All in all - as a general search engine it's OK, but as a specialist one it's great.
