I'm currently using Atomz as a seach engine for my website. I use it to create an index of each of my websites. I have an account setup for each website, so when I type in search keywords, I don't have pages returned from the different websites, so I can setup a search for each website and know that when I type in a keyword I only get valid hits for THAT website.

As we're expanding, Atomz is getting more expensive. I initially put it in as a quick solution, however now I want to do something in house.

Does anyone have any recommendations of a search engine I can download and utilize? Preferrably free, or cheap.

Thanks in advance. :)

Hi gahooper, welcome to the forum. this topic doesn't actually fall under the guidelines for this area, but that's because it hasn't been posted before. :p Good topic I feel, we should get some interesting suggestions. I have not used any myself, so i cannot be of assistance with a reco. I do think that notre ami Francais' suggestion might work with Windows, though. I think he meant it is written in php...

Chris is right, all though there are some subtle differences between php ported for linux, and php ported for windows, typically a script will run on either. You can run into problems if the script is not optimized for the platform you are using, but this is usually not a problem.

one site that might be helpful is www.hotscripts.com (http://www.hotscripts.com). You can search a large database of available scripts / snippits.

Fluid Dynamics (fdsearch) has an inexpensive script. I converted some of my old Atomz sites to it (when they started inserting ads) and have been satisfied.

Whatever solution you adopt, be sure that there's a match with the amount of content. FDSearch, I think, is supposed to be good for up to 10K pages with some users running on many more, but it wouldn't do for a million page site.
