404 Question

Hi,

I am new to the forums so hello to everyone! :)

I have recently put in place a 404 via a htaccess file for the old removed pages. I have been monitoring Googles indexing of the site and it seems to be taking a while to sift out the old pages.

Does anyone have any idea of how long the process of Google re-indexing the content will take? So far this month we have had 180 unique hits from Google Robot?!?

Why not use a 301 redirect?
