Prospects in the UK are pretty good. The average entry level (trainee/assistant) SEO role in London pays £14-20k and are increasingly common, as there aren't enough seasoned professionals to go around. To get hired as a trainee you'll typically need an enquiring mind, a basic grasp of SEO theory and either web development or account management/sales experience.
With 1-3 years SEO experience salaries range from £20-35k, although at that level you'll also need an understanding of PPC, email and affiliate marketing, landing page design, online PR etc.
The immediate future is rosy, as the industry is growing rapidly, there's a skills shortage and ignorance is still rife. Long term you can generalise into online marketing or become a high valued SEO expert - a reflection of the increase to sales you can help companies to generate.
You should start by reading SEO sites and blogs, such as this one, and practising either on your own website (it's worth learning to build your own :-) or a close friends.
Have I addressed all your questions?

- the first: learn the SEO basic
- second test and practise
- forums, blog seo experts.
then: learn-test, learn-test
the more you test the more you will get result and you will develop your experience

I think if you know SEO and could prove it, you can write your own ticket in the states, either directing a staff at an agency or working of a top online etailor... In the next few years I pretick that most online companies or companies that have online services will fill SEO jobs interally, as they do with filling SEM jobs internally.

1. what are the job prospects in SEO ?
-Very Good if you are good, however most companies want specialists now. Larger firs may more for less experience and train.
2.What do companies look for in a SEO professional?
Good Results for very competitive terms.
3. wat is the job profile of a SEO professional?
lots of inks and marketing, lots of analysis.
4. does it have a bright future?
Most SEOs if well-rounded leave the firms they work for in about 2 years and start consulting or thier own firm.
5. Where should one start to become a SEO professional?
You need a portfolio to show your work. Rank some site.
6. Do companies hire freshers and give training for SEO jobs?
Very hard, because some people pick it up quicker. Its harder to determine that. You may get lucky and get a freelance job as a trial.

As many guys here mentioned the good portfolio will help a lot, collect the highest search volume keywords those you had ranked your clients on the first page with major search engines.
If you get some company to rank first page for a term similar to "Web design" , then it is easy for you to find a job :D

99.9% of US companies have no clue as to what SEO is all about, let alone its marketing power. Most web or business owners think their web sites should be No. 1 at Google automatically or magically.
The job prospect of SEO pros remains unclear, in my opinion. However, if you are really good, you will be able to find people who need your service. I'd think it is more a freelancer's game.
