For the last several days when I type www.google.com into my browser it automatically forwards me to google.ca. Has this happened to anyone else?
Thanks,
Amy

It is geotargeting you to the Canadian version of Google. There should be a link near the bottom that says "Go to Google.com" and it will then default to Google.com for you.

That is so odd. I wonder why it defaulted me to Canada when I am in the US. Also, I looked over the page and didn't even notice that link to default me to google.com before you pointed it out.
Thanks,
Amy

I live in Canada.
Google is set to www.google.com but defaults to www.google.ca.
I want it to default www.google.com as set.
What do I need to add in my settings to "fool" it.
Thanks,
Steve

It needs to know who you are in order to do that. The easiest way would be to install the Google toolbar and then make it search on Google.com as a default from within the options.
I do this myself.
Keep in mind, the reason I do this is because I'm a professional, full-time SEO and most of my clients are international. If I was just Joe Canuck then the results from Google.ca are typically more relevant to Canadians.

I'm an internet marketer myself
and this Google search issue has been driving me nuts.
It's hard to SEE what my clients in the U.S. see.
Thanks Again.

If you are in the US but get defaulted to google.ca it may be that the ISP is using Canadian hub.
1. If your security and privacy are settings set high in your browser you will be defaulted to Google.ca
2. To see your American advertising use Search.AOL

It's funny, since this thread was posted, I got rerouted through to Google.ca a few times, when the last time prior to this was probably a year ago. I am in Canada, though, but it makes me wonder if they reset a setting to ensure us Canadians really want .com and not .ca, perhaps for more local search reasons.

Maybe they are using their new demographic info to send people there... <--- a joke

Maybe they are tying my Google account login for searching to my AdSense check amount to give me personalized .ca results for my income demographic :p <--- yep, that's a joke too

It also means that geo-targeting on AdWords is probably being mis-targetted for you and your ISP.
I think Google Accounts are a good way to state clearly to Google where they should consider you to be. If it's not set then Google can default to their geo-detection technology.
