I hadn't seen this mentioned so I thought I would just note what I have observed in case anyone else has additional information.
I currently have a couple of sites enrolled in the Google Sitemaps program. All the sitemaps I have registered were developed in exactly the same manner. All have been verified by Google (both for validity and ownership).
For sitemaps on older domains, I get information such as top search queries and top search clicks. I do not get this for at least one newer domain (with a twist explained below). My analytics show searches from Google however.
The domain in question is actually a new domain (about a year old but only been active for about a month) but is an alias for an old domain (5+ years) that is being 301 redirected (that's the twist). I don't currently have any brand new domains of original content to test so this might be interesting for someone to do.
Another interesting difference is on the "Page Analysis" section of the Stats tab. On the "new" domain, I see two options at the bottom for Common Words. One is "In your site's content" and the other is "In external links to your site." Neither of these options is populated for the new domain. But these options aren't even shown for the older, more established domain that has hundreds of inbound links. Very odd.
I don't know if this is evidence of a sandbox-like effect or not. It's sort of like determining the existence of an invisible celestial body by observing the effects of gravity on surrounding bodies. It is inferential evidence at best.
Make of it what you will.
