research, research, research... try to become an expert in whatever you're selling or your client is selling in the shortest amount of time possible. I like to use a tool on SEO Tool Set (http://www.seotoolset.com/tools/free_tools.html) to see what keywords my competitors are optimized for also. Digitalpoint.com also has a great keyword tool.

Here is a quick start guide, compile a keyword list and use free tools such as WebCEO to find out the search frequency on them
1) Provides services
Look up sites providing similar services for keywords. First thing to look for is links on SERP, then look up directories such www.dmoz.org.
2) Sells products
Look up shopping search engines such as Froogle, PriceGrabber etc for similar keywords
3) Provides only information on a specific topic.
Lookup content rich sites such as About.com and Wikipedia.org. Wikipedia is perhaps a very good resource for non-commercial stuff, but About.com is a very good source as well.
When you build a keyword list from the resources, group them together on specific topic or relevancy to each other. Use tools such as WordTracker to find similar and related keywords. Grouping and neat organization should be the first objective.
After you’re done with the Keyword list, look up their search frequency and determine which ones you want to work with first.
