So theory has it that the older a site is, the better it ranks.

How do you find out how old a site is?

For instance, I know toolbar PR really doesn't give an accurate report to a site's true PR. But we did just have a PR update a month ago - so I have to wonder, if I see a well put together page with TBPR 0, either a) it's not as well put together as I thought if Google assigned it PR 0 at the last update OR b) It's new and hasn't been assigned PR yet.

Or maybe I'm going down the wrong thought path all together. But I'm still curious how you know how old a site is.

Okay I'll throw this in too - no pages on the site are cached (according to Google Toolbar)

You can see older versions of a site in The Wayback Machine (http://www.archive.org), which also shows a date along with it. While you won't know to 100% certainty how old the site is (since sites aren't automatically added to the database) it gives you a good idea; especially when compared with Domain Name Whois Data (http://centralops.net/co/).

BTW: For Godaddy registered domains, you will have to check the GoDaddy Whois Database (https://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/whois.asp) .

Hope that helps,

I'm not sure if this date thing is specifically targeted towards the site or the domain in particular. From what I can tell, that phrase should be changed to:

The older a page is the better it ranks. I don't think the actual date a domain was registered or first indexed has anything to do with the rankings of pages on the site.

It's not an on going thing to help ranking. There is a delay before your site will begin ranking, but once you're over that delay, you're on level ground with all other things being equal. The problem is, older sites have been around longer to obtain more link wieght, that has had time to mature in the engines.
