A few months back a client site changed hosting providers. My company was originally hosting the site, but a decision was made to change hosting providers because of email and security issues. When the hosting change took place, the site was taken down at the old host, as it was brought online at the new host. I have since learned that it is best to leave the site up for a few months before taking it down. Anyway, The problem is that the site slowly lost rankings until it had none left on any search engine. I do a "site:" search on Google and a lot of the pages are still in the index, but the site does not have any rankings. The site has been without rankings for 3 months. A domain search shows nothing but the pages are supposedly still in the index. Any ideas?

When the site was moved to the new host it sounds like something happened--like the site was down for a period of time or unreachable.

I've moved plenty of sites from host to host to host and have never lost any rankings. Have you looked at the log files on the new host to see if the bots continued to crawl the site as usual? That's probably going to be the first indication--if they weren't visiting the site on the new host then they probably couldn't access the domain/site at the new host.

Problem Solved- Somehow, a no robots tag was added to the site by the new hosting provider. It has been removed.
