It was just the other day (http://forums.searchenginewatch.com/showthread.php?t=717) when we posted news that MS had launched several new regional versions of its Newsbot search demo.
The Newsbot project began last fall (http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3110201) and offers several personalized features.
Today, the MSNBC version (beta) has gone live. (http://newsbot.msnbc.msn.com/)
The layout and search functionality of the new MSNBC (http://newsbot.msnbc.msn.com/) version is just like the other 17 versions already online.
Content is gathered from more than 4800 sources via a Moreover feed.
More about this new offering from Search Day (http://searchenginewatch.com/searchday/article.php/3386371), the news release (http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/040727/sftu063_1.html) and a just published News.com (http://news.com.com/Microsoft+to+launch+Google+News+rival/2100-1025_3-5284216.htm) story.
Note: If you review the News.com story you'll read only about Google News and Newsbot.
However, MANY OTHER excellent news search and browsing tools exist. The reporter should have mentioned at least a few others. Here are a couple that should have been considered.
+ Topix.net (http://www,topix.net)
More than 7000 sources. Thousand of "pre-built" categories. RSS feeds for all of them. Excellent!
+ Yahoo News (http://news.yahoo.com)
More than 7000 sources. Excellent advanced search interface.
+ Findory (http://www.findory.com) and Blogory (http://www.blogory.com)
Both resources from personalization expert Greg Linden in Seattle. Findory handles news while Blogory handles the blogosphere. An "adaptive" RSS feed is also available.
+ NewsNow (http://www.newsnow.co.uk)
An excellent tool to browse news by category. Nearly 18,000 sources are being crawled.
+ Rocket News (http://www.rocketnews.com)
Over 11,000 sources, customized RSS feeds, strong with business press material.
