Hi folks,
One of my sites aint doing too well on Google, it started well but is now slipping back. The home page has been optimised with appropriate keywords, navigation and cms issues have been ironed out etc and there really doesn't seem to be anything that should cause Google a problem.
Then I realised that its not in DMOZ. Silly me I forgot. But now I want to know that if I do submit it, is it going to have any effect on the way the site is ranked by Google et al?
Is there any point in submitting to DMOZ?
hmmmmm.....
1) A one way link
2) A free link
3) A link that does not have to be reciprocated
4) A link from a page that usually has OK PR
5) A link from an 'authority' site
6) A link that could be considered 'on-topic'/'on-theme'
7) A link that is duplicated by a few thousand clones, may of which have some PR
8) A link that might generate a small amount of traffic
....personally, I don't think there is any point ...

Getting listed in DMOZ is not going to make or break your ability to position yourself well in the Google SERPs. We have plenty of clients who are positioned well and are not listed in DMOZ.
I suggest submitting to DMOZ and then forgetting about it. If you get listed - great. However don't hold your breath. I have sites that have been waiting 3+ years now for inclusion. Also get listed in other directories and make sure your SEO is as good as it should be. that includes making sure you are targeting keywords that are realistic for your site.

If anything, a dmoz listing is looked at as a credible site. The one way back links are great and the list of Dmoz sites are picked up by numerous other directories, so in essence you're getting listed in 100s of other sites too.
If you have a niche site or geo-targeting site, You may want to check out the Wiki (http://www.wikipedia.org) directory and dictionary too.
