How fast can/does content find its way into the Google index? Or any other search engine for that matter?

Let's assume that:

- I'm smart about my internal linking so that all pages are easily crawlable
- my site is already known to the search engines and they are showing up regularly to crawl
- I have a PR6 on my home page

If I were to add 1000 new pages to my site, at what rate might these pages get indexed? What are the variables that effect this rate? Can I use any rules of thumb to predict how many indexed pages I'll have over time?
