Hello,

Does anyone know how often google updates a website's pagerank?
2) How does it determine how often to crawl a website?

Thanks

The frequency of PR updates is arbitrary lately though they do seem to be done at least every couple of months....

The crawl is determined by a number of factors.... you can help by setting the recrawl instructions in your metatags (though this is not a guarantee)... you want to get links in sites that are crawled on a very regular basis.... you want to have new content every time the spiders visit which will prompt them to come more often.

Thanks for your reply Aussie,

So, does that mean if I have a website with good quality information, google will rank me lower just because it doesnt get updated often? Or is this simply PR issue?

Thanks

Googleguy said that pagerank is contantly recalculated internally now, the visible pagerank on the toolbar is only published every few months.

PR is that little greenbar. SERP is where you rank for a term in search. Though it has a minor impact on the search results it is not the main factor.

Is there a way to know what my websites "internal" PR is?

If you have a directory listing in Google directories that has the PR and I think it is current.

There's no way to tell what the PR is internally. They compute it on an on-going basis but only update the Toolbar PageRank approximately every 3 months or so. I can definitely see their point for doing that.

Thats odd, I submitted my directory listing about 4 months ago, still no sign of it in the entire google directory?

How long does it take?

Hi Doc, the "Google" Directory is actually just pulling from DMOZ, which is where you submitted. I would not hold my breath waiting for the site to be indexed. You can see more information regarding DMOZ submissions at this Forum (http://forums.searchenginewatch.com/forumdisplay.php?f=9).

In the meantime, have you submitted to Y! Directory and others?

Yes, in fact I went for the paid inclusion in Yahoo and maybe its unrelated but I've had more organic referrals from Yahoo than I've had from Google.

Hi doc...oh it's related ;)

You will find yourself possibly rising in the ranks at Google for particular terms highly relvant to the directory category at Yahoo, too. Best $299 you can spend on a link, IMO. Find some other directories and keep checking at DMOZ, but don't resubmit there per their rules.

Thanks for the info Chris,

Are there any tips you can offer me for link building? (Aside from the sticky thread)

But the Yahoo referals from Paid Inclusion cost so much a click... have you been getting those clicks or are you talking about other pages getting better placement and thus good organic free clicks?????

I was refering to our website pages showing up higher in organic SERPs of Yahoo than in Google. We also do PPC campaigns with Yahoo, and you're right, they do cost alot (anywhere from $2 - $10 per CLICK!)

Another question: do IBLs from pages with low PR (less than 2-3) negatively affect my SERP ranking?

Im guessing yes?

Okay doc let's go through a couple of things.

1. Inbound links do not have a negative effect unless they are part of some spam effort... PR rank does not have negative impact.

2. AND THIS IS IMPORTANT You said you did paid inclusion for Yahoo: now if it was a directory listing that is one thing... it if it was real PFI where you submit various pages of your site for spidering... any set rank is not guaranteed but they will add it and recheck it every 48 hours.... and you can change the page so you see what is happening. This is explained here: http://forums.searchenginewatch.com/showthread.php?t=369

They also charge a per click cost beyond the initial submission cost....

I think perhaps you just did a directory submission... the $299 a year cost.

ahh, I see. Well in that case I was refering to the $299/year directory listing.

:D

Definitely, I think its effect is pretty noticable too. I can see it in my logs.

You are welcome!

The sticky thread I assume you are speaking of is in "Link Building (http://forums.searchenginewatch.com/forumdisplay.php?f=44)?" Nacho has created and updated a great list of resources there.

I have written an introductory style article available here (http://www.instantposition.com/website-promotion/Choosing-Link-Partners.cfm).

There are a few good recent thread available in this forum here (http://forums.searchenginewatch.com/showthread.php?t=5889) and here (http://forums.searchenginewatch.com/showthread.php?t=5499) that may get you more on your way.
