My understanding in the past was sub-domains are not unqieu IP's. With that said if they are not unique unless specified to your webhost, how would the various search engines see these sub-domains as unique IP's to the TLD?

I don't believe that subdomains are ever regarded as having a separate IP - unless specifically set up on a different IP via DNS.
It's more a case that subdomains are traditionally treated as being separate sites. This of course means that "subdomain" spamming - ie, autogenerating subdomains by keyword - is also an old method in the game.

Keep in mind that http*www.domain.com/ and http*domain.com/ are treated as separate sites, which is why you need to set them up with mod_rewrite so you default to one or the other. The www version is actually a subdomain.
