I posted a SiteMapIndex to Google's SiteMap's submission page. It shows the status as such:

Sitemap URL Submitted Downloaded Status
(URL of SiteMapIndex) Sitemap Index Jun 8 2 days ago OK

It correctly identifies that it is an Index and my logs show it being downloaded by GoogleBot. My logs also show the SiteMap's declared within the Index being downloaded twice. However I have not seen much bot activity on 60% of the URLs in the SiteMap's.

What I would like to find is the status and/or any errors of the SiteMaps declared in the Index. Any one know of any way of doing that?
A quick method I may try is to submit the actual SiteMap, wait for Google to download and verify it. If OK, remove it from the submission site and put it in the SiteMapIndex.

The "2 days ago" it it's most recent download. It was first downloaded within an hour of posting it and has been downloaded numerous times.. The SiteMaps defined within the SiteMapIndex have been downloaded a couple of times, each at least 7 days ago (same day the Index was first downloaded, according to logs).

It looks like Google just added a new feature that might do what I'm looking for. It lists how many "Total Sitemaps" you have (different then the list of submitted URLs to sitemaps). Once my new version of the Index gets downloaded hopefully it will indicate the SiteMaps contained within the Index
