All,

I've seen this banded about a bit - but no definitive answer.

I'll try and be as precise as I can.

I have a new domain - registered for the first time ever around 3 months ago.

First page was put up on the host about 3 weeks ago.

It has around 100 pages on it now - generally I update it every day.

I linked to its index page from another domain on another IP address (totally different through all four digits) - and the domain on that inbound linking IP is fully indexed and ranks for its terms fine.

The inbound linking domain is around 3 years old.

When I enter
site:www.domain-name.com

The serp shows the listing below - and ONLY that listing :-

Domain Name
WELCOME TO freddy kabbodles web where anything can happen domainname.com is the fun place to be.
www.domain-name.com - 15k - Cached - More from this site

Then - I click on the "More from this site link" - and get

Domain Name
WELCOME TO freddy kabbodles web where anything can happen domainname.com is the fun place to be.
www.domain-name.com - 15k - Cached

So - there we see an example of a route whereby I attempt to check whether or not the site is indexed fully - and it appears that I only have the one page indexed - the main page.

(Note in the above example that my index page title tag contains "Domain Name" - and my domain name is indeed "www.domain-name.com" - so the words are the same in the title as they are for the domain.

Next - I try entering the following :-
www.domain-name.com

And this is what I get in the serps.

Domain Name
WELCOME TO freddy kabbodles web where anything can happen domainname.com is the fun place to be.
www.domain-name.com - 15k - Cached - More from this site

However - unlike with the site command - I also get in this serp around 1000+ other sites - which appear mainly to have the word "name" in them (where name is the second word in my domain name).

In this example, I then click on "More From this site" and what it returns is worrying me now.

Domain Name
WELCOME TO freddy kabbodles web where anything can happen domainname.com is the fun place to be.
www.domain-name.com - 15k - Cached

Domain Name
WELCOME TO freddy kabbodles web where anything can happen domainname.com is the fun place to be.
www.domain-name.com - 15k - Cached

I get a double listing EXACTLY as above.

Is this a penalty of some sort applied to my site? I couldnt think why if it is.

Is there anyone around who has experienced this and bottomed it out?

Cheers

First page was put up on the host about 3 weeks ago.Ah, then it's easily too soon for all the pages on the site to be indexed, especially if they're going up gradually.

It's not unusual at all for just the index page to be fetched and then additional pages as time goes on. Just make sure the site can be crawled properly and don't worry about the rest. You should see more pages in the index in about a month or so, but your best bet in the meantime is to keep putting up content, get some more quality inbound links so there are more avenues leading to the site, and just leave the crawling to them.

If it's any comfort to have company, I've got a domain that I've had for a couple of years or so that's been sitting on hosting unused for ages. I just started to put up a bit of content this week and linked to the homepage early Tuesday morning from another of my sites, and by yesterday (Thursday) just the homepage was showing as indexed just like you showed - at Yahoo and Google - including when clicking on "more pages from this site."

This is normal for a new site - even if it's a domain that's been owned for a while or even hosted. Technically there isn't a site until there's content on it, at least a few pages that are linked together - IMHO, anyway. Now they know you're there, and they'll get around to getting the rest.

There's a time lag between the engines finding out a site exists, crawling and indexing - and then, ranking.

Hi Marcia - thanks for that.

Just to confirm though - when you said
"just the homepage was showing as indexed just like you showed -"

Do you mean its "double listed" in the serps aswell like mine?

So you think in general maybe that the double listing is NOT a penalty of some kind - more just a case that it hasnt been crawled yet?

Thanks
