Hi,

After publishing a redign for a site Google didn't seem to crawl the site (and new pages). The old site was part of the search results, and waiting for about 10 weeks now NO result is left. The site is not present in Google anymore.

I don't know what I did wrong. I believe the site is FAR from complicated and the HTML (HEAD/meta tags) is correct.

What is going wrong? Can u help me?

It concerns:
http://www.therightdirection.nl

Google reference:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=site%3Awww.therightdirection.nl&btnG=Google+Search

Used in HEAD tag:

<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Language" content="nl">
<title>The Right Direction</title>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1252">
<meta name="description" content="The Right Direction, van concept tot creatie-Den Haag">
<meta name="keywords" content=" reclame,design,concept,advertising,advertenties,ma
rketing,ontwerper,campagnes,brochures,verpakkingen
,packaging,illustraties,logo,huisstijl">
<meta name="classification" content="art direction,design,den haag">
<meta name="robots" content="INDEX,FOLLOW">
</head>

What is going wrong? Can u help me?

Cheers,
Pieter

When using Lynx Viewer to spider your site, from the index page, there is one link to follow, (the skip intro link), and when you get to the next page, the links are not being picked up by Lynx Viewer so Google will not find the other pages in your site. It doesn't help at all that there is no text on the very first page of your site.

Try to incorporate a text link navigation into your whole site. As your site is now, and you are noticing, the search engine spiders are not getting pass the second page.

Also, if it was my site, I would drop the splash page. While it does look great and eye pleasing, it offers no content, and the user has to click on the next link. It would be more convenient to have the very first page shown on your site to be the one with the main goodies.

I'm not seeing any links to your site indexed in any of the top search engines. you'll need to start on link building to get your site indexed. This is one of the best ways to get your site indexed.

Search engines not ability to follow URL's in flash sites (Google make try some).
Imagemaps is'nt good idea and not crawled.

Quick solution:
Make a sitemap.html (including listing and linking your all pages) and put a link in your Homepage...

Hi people,

Thanks for the quick reply.

I'll make a sitemap and make invisble text link navigation on every page (ie. the links will be the same color as the background, so the design is not touched). I also recommended the site intro to be removed, but the designer/owner doesn't prefer this.

Question:
- Why doesn't Google even have the first/second pages listed?
- Gerardism: What do u mean with "link building".. getting a link to the site on other pages/sites?

Cheers,
Pieter

Hi Pieter,

The best way to get indexed in the search engines is to have incoming links, and to have a lot of patience as well. I didn't have to manually submit my own site to google, msn or yahoo. Through the links that I've gathered, the spiders found and indexed the site.

Don't put any invisible text on your site. Thats a sure way of getting banned in the search engines. Don't try to hide anything, basically what the search engine spiders see and index should be what the user should see as well.

Unfortunatly some design elements may have to be sacrificed. Having the best looking website will do the owner no good if it's not getting indexed and found in the search engines.

Hi Gerardism,

Thanks again for the quick respons and your advice. I'll follow up on it and try :) to have patience.... But I think the basics should be..

I'll ask the designer to add textual links to the design.

Still it is very odd that the first two pages of the site haven't been added to Google :confused:

Pieter
