Hi, I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this (please forgive me if it's not, I'm new), but I am looking for some info on search engine registration companies, and if anyone has opinions on who is best to use or what not.
Cheers,
Smitty

No need to register with the search engines, Smitty!
Simply make sure your site is listed on other sites such as directories, and the search engines such as Google and Yahoo will automatically add your listing.
You will of course still have to optimize your site, but that's a whole 'nother ballgame from registering/submitting. Those are unnecessary wastes of time.
Good luck!

I would start out by visiting some sites like seopros.org that have some resources and information on what to look for in hiring someone. Jill is correct about the larger search engines that spider, but there are smaller ones that do not and if you want as much exposure as possible it's a good idea to be listed as many places as possible.
We submit to about 180 places on average for each client project, and if you would like to use the list that we use, contact me and I'll provide you with a copy. There's no reason why you cannot do the work youself, but if you do hire someone, just make sure they have good referrences and do the submission by hand.
Thanks,
Chris

How soon after submitting your site did it appear in Google?
Thanks,
Chris

There is no need to submit to any worthwhile SE and If I were going to do that I certainly would not use any automated submission.
Trust me. Right now Google and Yahoo are both finding sites that are only listed in whois.

>>what to look for in hiring someone.
There is absolutely no reason in the world to hire someone to submit a site, and no reason to use automated submission either.
>>but there are smaller ones
I have yet to hear of anyone getting traffic from any of the smaller ones, and any that are worthwhile send out crawlers so sites will get found through links.
Submitting to search engines is IMO largely a waste of time for the reasons already pointed out, but submitting to SEO friendly directories may bring you a bit of traffic and a few good links also.
I would suggest putting a few links out so that the spidering search engines can find your site and use your time to submit to SEO friendly directories.

Instead of submitting your site to a search engines addurl page it is best to get links pointing to your site from sites that are relevant to your own. All the addurl page does is alert the engine that the site exists, they come along and crawl it... thats about it!
To find out where your site lays in the over all natural make up of the web, they need to follow links that point to the site from other external websites, they will then have a better understanding of where you should be placed in the search results.

use your time to submit to SEO friendly directories.
Good advice. Also, look for links from pages related to your site topic. Excellent link building topic from Nacho here (http://forums.searchenginewatch.com/showthread.php?threadid=2616)

I agree with Marcia, and to add to that, to me it's a question of cost benifit. I maybe get 1 click from a small engine every time I get 10 or 100k kliks from the large ones, across many sites. It's just not worth my time. So, cosider what your time is worth to you and use where you gain the most.
I would just focus on the major channels in SEO and then use whatever time you have left on other kinds of marketing.
