I always thought bounce rate and visitor trending should be one of the key factors for your search engine rankings . It should be given more importance than links.
Is it true ?

Links reference documents on the web. Its at the heart of how Google has decided informational pieces relate to each other. I think people forget what a link means and why they tend to undervalue them. There's no doubt it can seem unfair sometimes, but if you think back to the early days of the web when it was one page in the middle of nowhere pointing to another saying "this is where you go for X", it kind of makes sense.
Bounce rate and time spent on each page are equally important for better search engine ranking along with good link juice

bounce rates and time spent are about the site itself - the user experience
links are more about votes on content and impact SERPs bringing visitors to the site
