I submitted my site to many free directories using the same description text in all directories. The description text I used there is also the same as the meta description of my website home page. I was wondering if Google or any other search engine will penalize for duplicate content? Or if the ranking of my website will suffer? Please advise.

Interesting question.... it would not have a big impact on page - as there is much more content there... the directories etc. are known to have similar copy in many cases so not too big of a deal... could drop from SERPs the directory listings for the company name apart from the one with the highest PR but that is just my thoughts.

That's what meta tags are intended to be used for...I am not concerned about it on my own directories.

I do however try to make every page have a unique set of meta tags relevant to that page.

...and of course, avoid spamming meta tags.
