Alexa shows traffic to your site, and compete is a combination of PR and alexa.
Please correct me if i am wrong.

as per my knowledge Both are useful .:)What do you actually use them for? I can not think of any possible use (except trying to scam advertisers into thinking your site is better than it actually is)

They both use biased sampling in their data collection that is sooooooo easy for a webmaster to manipulate --> they are useless

I've personally found Alexa very useful for increasing visitors to my sites.
To give an example. I find sites with high Alexa ranking and then further use it to find sections of the site with most visitor activity.
For example:
Craigslist UK - obviously high Alexa ranking.
But when you look further down the results it shows which sections of the site has the most visitor activity.
Results for Craigslist UK shows that london.craigslist receives 85% of visitor activity. Therefore, I use the London section to post ads and messages and do get results!
Hope this helps,

They both useless
Why do you find them useless?
We find they are good for giving you an indication of traffic level. If you have a high traffic site and want to know about your competitors' sites traffic, these sites will give you a reasonably accurate idea of higher or lower traffic levels. We only find it works on high traffic sites though. And it seems quite US focussed as well.

I can only tell you from actual examples that if site A has x amount of traffic, and site B has 1.2x traffic, and for 2 months they had the same traffic, Alexa will show this on their comparison graph.
As I mentioned above, in our experience it only works on very high traffic sites though.

I wrote an article many years ago about a site that actively campaigned to get members and all their friends to install the Alexa toolbar ... they got an Alexa ranking to around 250 (if I recall correctly) .... they did it to show juist how easy it is to manipulate.

Personally. I like and use both often. Compete for overall traffic of competitors. Alexa for traffic ranking, age of domain, and link profile.

I still feel both are useful.
