Does anyone know how important it is to be able to find the links page through visible site navigation? I want to have the links page, and I don't mind if it's spidered and indexed, but I don't want to link to it within our site.

If you do that then don't expect too many people linking back to you. an orphaned link page will get a link request to me deleted faster than anything.

Yikes. Well I guess that won't work well - but understandably. It definitely limits the types of reciprocal links I can seek. What's the alternative to reciprocal linking?

buying links, registering at directories, renting links, writing articles, getting links naturally, making actual real business partnerships to where your link partners are not trying to be underhanded.

...this is what we do. we buy "advertising from big media sites who don't realize the seo power of small links
try it. it's dirt cheap and since media sites are spidered every day and carry high PR, your links from these sites will be heavily weighted.
cheers.

that is where lots of the link brokers are operating. a friend of mine got gobs and gobs of pagerank for $500 a month. if you had to buy all the links he got from a broker it would probably cost $5,000 to $10,000 / month.

wanna see something nifty:
http://www.accessatlanta.com
the name of my company is EncoreTickets.com
check out the real eastate i get from this major cox media property in atlanta. as opposed to using ONE banner ad at 120x600, i populate that banner space with mucho links.
much more powerful utilization of the space.

That certainly is an extremely nifty way to use a huge
amount banner ad space and use anchor text to get
relevant links back to your site. Now that's what I
call optimized spending of advertising dollars. :D
My hat off to you on that one.

I think it looks like those ads go through an ad server and thus do not provide backlinks?
