Well I have to say I don’t understand how SEO works…I thought I had a decent grasp of it….but the horrible SEO results for a website that I have recently launched seem to say otherwise. The website, which we have launched about a month ago is Sheffieldfurniture.com. The previous website had VERY little text, most of the wording were Jpegs… There was very little content in the site. We totally changed the site to what you see now when you go to our home page. The updated site has a large amount of content, title tags, alt tags and folder names that are all relevant to the content and the keywords that we would like to rank well in. The frustrating and confusing thing is we have gone DOWN in our rankings, we have “dropped off the map” completely it seems! I have even made a HTML, XML and TXT site map and submitted them to google…I really don’t know what else is needed… Is it just a matter of time? Will google totally drop your old standings if it sees that your website has completely changed?
the keywords that I would like to rank well in are (Stickley, Henredon, Hickory Chair, and other main furniture brands that we display) Thanks for your help guys, I need it!

Not to sound harsh but, you need to hire a pro (someone able to code html by hand) to assist with this site.

Site is available via:
www.
non-www.
.....main/ main.html
non-www...main/main.html

I you want to rank for terms like Stickley, Henredon, Hickory Chair and other you might consider using those terms in content on the site. Notice none of those terms appear on your homepage as seen by Google:
http://209.85.215.104/search?q=cache:http://www.sheffieldfurniture.com/main/main.html&hl=en&strip=1

TITLEs are near duplicates:
Stickley Traditional Designer Rugs - Mahal
Stickley Traditional Designer Rugs - Mughal Lattice

Also the counter at the bottom of the page needs to go.

XML-Sitemaps.com is not a good source for your site site map. Good for xml yes but not html.

:confused:I have MANY of those terms all throughout the site....its not on my home page..google searches my whole web site, I didnt think it needed to be on the home page..:

Your page titles make sense in theory, but that's not how Google reads them. The beginnings are way to similar. To differentiate, you need to put the product line and/or manufacturer at the beginning. Then, follow up with the broad keywords. (Ex. Mahal Rugs by Stickley). This keeps page titles specific to what the page is - "Mahal rugs by Stickly"...not "Stickly Rugs - the Mahal line".

ahh thanks for clarifying BasicE. I think I have some work to do on those titles.

oh and Beu why do you say the counter has to go? One of my co workers put it in there... (we use google anaylitics but she wanted to keep the counter also)...but we dont use it so it can probably go I was just wondering why you said it had to go, is there some conflict?

It's good you've added some real text on your home page, it has not been crawled yet by Google and if you look at the "cache text only" right now, the only thing Google sees is your html menu.

So adding this content below your menu is a great improvement.... Your meta tags are relevant. Just be patient and your site will improve...just focus on one way links

You're welcome.. One way link is other website linking to your site without you having to link to them. I strongly advise to read a lot about link building before starting.

Search for websites that may link to you ( local website, local organization ).....Interior designers website....even maybe your customer's websites..... contact them and ask them to link to you.

Don't participate in link exchange or link your site to inappropriate website.

Hey don't get tensed. No need to worry.Perform some optimization techniques like social bookmarking which yields immediate traffic to your site on targetted keywords. You can definitely see better results on those keywords.I have found solution to my site at <snip> which produced best output. You may also try there....

The advice given here is great. Find some decent ebooks like Aarron Wall' SEO book.

I hope seo books might not work well.Seo needs a practical knowledge rather than bookish stuff.search for nicheforseo.
