Hi there,
Well Ive decided to take on board what other members have been saying on here and to kick off my SEO business, with experience gaining.
Ive decided to take a wordpress blog, and see if I can get it fully optimized and ranking. I have no timescale on this..but would appreciate it if I have any questions, if people could help me out.
Im going to non stop read this forum and other newsletters I have signed up for.
WISH ME LUCK
neil
Good luck! You should start off by by putting your blog in a folder called "blog" on the root. Next, rewrite the URLs so they are more "search engine friendly" and don't end with a number.
best of luck!

There are a ton of plug-ins available for on-page WP optimization (and BTW, a book or tutorial on SEO doesn't necessarily solve any WP problems), but the single most problematic issue with WordPress blogs is the redundancy.
The very first thing that needs to be done is remedy that, since starting out there will be a very limited link profile and less than satisfactory PageRank, so that will limit the number of pages indexed by Google, and unfortunately they seem to pick the wrong ones.
If people find valuable posts or articles at the engines, they'll possibly link to them; I have yet to have anyone link to the log-in page, and that is what's among the highest PR pages on a blog I've got sitting out there that's seriously neglected and will continue to be until I get further into digging into regular expressions and mod_rewrite to have effective control over the internal navigation.
It doesn't hurt at all to learn to use, or at least understand mod_rewrite, which nowadays is practically an SEO essential. On-page optimization isn't the first thing that needs tending to - it's the canonical issue that needs attention at the time of launch.
So true Marcia! From what I can gather there is no one solution when it comes to the rewrite because it seems to differ by host. As far as URLs, most WP blogs I've seen do it dynamically so it's worth going into the template removing the php and coding them by hand if you want to add nofollow or for other reasons. WP's I've seen don't always nofollow or use the most friendly url version for some of the "default" links.
Here is the WP page on rewrites for "Permalinks" but you also need to enter the information in the WP interface. Changing your permissions my also be necessary depending on the host.

Aside from WordPress issues, let's look focus on another issue because there's more than one issue here.
kick off my SEO business, with experience gaining.neroma, are you saying that you have experience and are wanting to start an SEO business? Or that you want to start an SEO business in order to gain experience? Sorry, but I'm not clear on that point so it would help if you'd clarify.
I have no timescale on this..but would appreciate it if I have any questions, if people could help me out.Are you looking for being helped out with WordPress issues, or with SEO, or with starting an SEO business?
Ive decided to take a wordpress blog, and see if I can get it fully optimized and ranking.SEO for WordPress is quite different from SEO for other types of sites - ie ecommerce or static content or business sites.
Have you optimized and gotten rankings for other types of sites?
