I found this one to be too wild not to mention over here. An article over the BBC News named School net search throws up porn (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/3719742.stm) says "Children at a secondary school in Bradford got a little more than they bargained for when an internet search for information about the heart resulted in a page of links to hardcore pornography." The search engine that delivered the results was the "Ask Jeeves' UK-based search engine".

Now that is a cool butler to a teenager. ;)

When I was in high school biology we had no such fun. We decimated the carcass of a few frogs and disected a coyote heart. It would have been so much more educational to have studied the female body in full action, after all it is related...

On a serious note this is not really funny and had it occured in an elementary setting it could be considered tragic if not illegal. There are so many filters and kids sites available that should and could be employed to prevent this. There is no excuse for the SE or the school.

The BBC news item also points out that the problem has been rectified.

School net search throws up porn

Children were not able to access the porn sites listed
Children at a secondary school in Bradford got a little more than they bargained for when an innocent classroom search linked to pornography.
The teenagers were using the Ask Jeeves' UK-based search engine to look for information on the heart during a biology lesson.

The links to hardcore pornography appeared because of a matching error between the keyword and the results, said Ask Jeeves.

The fault has now been rectified.

Wanna tell us why it occured? From the BBC:
"One of the terms was the name of a porn star Tera Heart."

Does that mean that the Ask Jeeves team has to track down and filter out all porn star names? I guess that brings a new meaning to "information retrieval research". ;)
