Aside from completely specialized linking strategies, I'm king of curious what "generic" linking strategies there are. For example there are free and paid directory submissions, forum postings with links, purchased/rented links, writing a page for another site and leasing space there, assorted reciprocal link requests, article submissions. What other "good" options are there?

You pretty much covered the generic basics. But don't forget about social media sites and user-generated-content web 2.0 sites.

So in addition I should include social bookmarking (one of the few things I don't get) and blogs that are not on my site. Anything else?
