Depending on the type of site, most of your visitors will be coming through the homepage, so you should put enough interesting content there to keep people interested and encourage them to dig deeper into the site.

The search engines will scan each page individually, so you want the homepage to have a general overview of what the site has to offer. The subpages can be more specific, with keywords reflecting specific products or articles. The homepage should also include links to subpages and a link to a sitemap that is crawler friendly.

Basically, add enough content so it is useful for visitors, but not to much that it would turn people away. At that point, you're probably in the realm of spamming your content.

It really depends on your site. In general, it is not a good idea to dump everything on the main page, unless you have a single long copy site.

A main page on the site is an entry point, captures the user attention and funnels him/her to the right direction on the site.

Pages on the site have one or more of the following purposes:

- entry & distribution page: provide users with main options to navigate through the site. For example, if you are an electronics etailer, your entry distribution will provide the different categories of products you sell in the site.
- Informational pages: present the client with information about the product or service
- Resolution pages: they answer any concerns/fears objections the site visitor might have
- Funnel pages: your sale funnel pages (check out process pages for example)

Of course, you can have a single page that serves all of these goals, it really depend on your site and your offering.

My suggestion is try to put in your homepage the best thing that your site offer maybe the product or services. But remember that it must have your keywords or targeted words

Thanks Khalid -This is really useful in helping me to remember to continually define my page goals (& stop stuffing them with too much info)
