Now I know that Danny is probably just going to come in and say "told you all so" or something along those lines, but how exactly does Wireless Gmail have anything to do with search. Google keep saying it, "We are focused on search and nothing more", though now you can get Gmail wireless to your mobile phone. I think they really need to have a good look at their mission statement again and possibly think about exactly how wireless and search go together, along with email, etc.

Isn't Gmail all about showing ads next to the messages? And you do need a pretty good information retrieval system (which basically a search engine is) in order to place good ads next to messages. So seems to me that without search, you can't do that. Hence, it has everything to do with search.
being focussed on search is more than just having an online search engine. :)

Nope. Its all about providing email!

Providing ads against email is only another revenue model for Google. The search algorithm and adsense algorithm are two completely different things. Quite personally, I believe the Gmail platform is nothing more than a test bench for Google to tweak their adsense algorithm. They can get some fairly accurate analysis IMO.
Anyway, all that is one thing, but how exactly is supplying Gmail to your mobile phone, which won't include ads, more direct access for you to retrieve messages etc and send email from your mobile. This is more and more like a portal and what next, full blown media platform??? Audio, video, games??? Googles going to have to adopt Terry Semel's classic one liner soon, "Yahoo is more than just search". :)

Gmail-mobile is a PHP application that will give you access to your account with any WAP-compatible phone (WML format), and you should be able to read your mail, compose message, reply, have access to your labels, etc.
Hmmmm....... I wonder if you will be able to search your email????
Maybe then it can get a "broad match" to their mission statement.

It somehow wouldn't surprise me if they sell ads specific to WAP and get them on your phone first, ie. ad, then inbox?
All about search they are....nothing more.... :) Just ask them, they'll tell you! Want a second opinion, ask them again!

"Yahoo is more than just search". I would say that Yahoo is everything but search. :D
But serious again,... when they say that they are about search then that really doesn't mean "just an online search engine".
Search is a broad term.
