I take it you're talking about the keyword meta tag. Although it is generally assumed that due to wide-spread abuse by spammers in the past, the keyword meta tag is not read by search engines for ranking purposes.

However, at SES San Jose last month, Shiva Shivakumar of Google in the "Meet the Crawlers"-session said that Google "looks" at the keyword meta tag and that "how much [the tag] weighs differs". Yahoo and Ask engineers said that the keyword meta tag was used for purposes other thanh ranking.
I think we can only take that as a confirmation that all 3 use the keyword meta tag for spam detection.
