Barry posted this morning at the SEW blog (http://blog.searchenginewatch.com/blog/060901-085505) about MC and Vanessa's show on WMR last night which discussed how Google handles accents in searches. Vanessa's nicely detailed analysis is at a Google Blog (http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2006/08/how-search-results-may-differ-based-on.html).
Barry pauses to wonder why the results differ, and I put forward this theory for discussion: In my very first opinion, following past Google "trends," I would say it has to do with the backlinks and inbound links using the accent within the anchor text. It is hard for me to test this, though, since I do not have a keyboard accent shortcut (I probably do but am not aware of it), not do i know of inbound linking tools that could split the two (hint hint Jim and/or Aaron).
What do you folks think?
