Hello it is my 1st post on Search engine watch forums.

I have one concern about the direction internet is going to.

We can see 100 of 1000 directories like dmoz and there are some softwares on the internet to grab data from dmoz and create same directories. Data on such directories exceeds 100 MBs.

Isnt it spamming ? and cant Dmoz do somthing in regards to copyrights ? Are they (internet stuffers) really providing directory services or just wasting the time of search engine robots, which time can be consumed in spidering legal and real content.

what do you think how it should be controlled. No one is controlling authority on the internet which could control black deeds guys.

what do you think what could be done to control all thse guys who are stuffing internet with rubbish ?

Welcome to the SEW Forums!

It's not so much spam, as it is noise and duplication, which I'll admit is close enough to spam for most people.

FTR, DMOZ specifically allows people to use their data to make their own directories. It would be difficult for them to claim commercial rights for work done by volunteers (not to mention it would dry up that source of volunteers pretty fast).

Some links for you to look at:

http://www.dmoz.org/license.html
http://rdf.dmoz.org/

As for what can be done about it, if you look around here and other SEO forums you will see a large number of people complaining that their "directories" are either being removed from search engine results en mass, or the rankings have dropped like a rock on a great many of them.

It's no longer an easy SEO trick to start a directory. But it was for a while, and so you will see a bunch of them out there still. But it's old news, and old rubbish, for the most part.

On the other hand, vertical directories are currently the darling of search, and for good reason.
