When I type site:friars.co.nz in Google, it tells me that there are close to 40,000 pages, however, if I go through the links (page by page using the numbers at the bottom of the google search results) then I see that there are only 517 pages on the site.

What is this discrepancy and what can we do about it?

I see this too, the reported count on my site varies from 20 - 11,500 (I got excited with that last one for a few seconds), yet the actual number of indexed pages remains the same.

Interestingly I've noticed that site:www.sitexyz.com doesn't actually return all of my indexed pages. I can do a search on a term that returns my one of my pages in the top organic position, yet it wasn't listed using the site: command. So far I've located at least 4 pages that aren't listed using that command, and I've not been looking too hard. I'd be interested in hearing any insights into why that is.
